Video Game Jam / Back to work on my tabs...
July 16, 2007, 11:23:40 AM
Well, I'm finally getting around to working on some more tabs.  I went ahead and posted what I've got for a couple of them.  I'll have more stuff to put up later.  I'm almost done with "Romero" from Breath of Fire.  I've got it arranged in three parts and I'm trying to condense it down to two.  More later.  Have fun.

Video Game Jam / Re: MTV Music Generator 2
July 06, 2007, 08:26:51 AM
Anybody else here have YouTube Grabber?  Nifty little free app that lets you copy and paste the URL of a YouTube video page and click Grab and it'll download it to the same directory the program is in.  I don't remember where I got it, but you can always Google it up.  Works great.  I downloaded a couple live videos by The Minibosses with it.  If you don't know who those guys are, you need to Google them up, too.  Great game music band specializing in NES music mostly.  They're crazy, but they're pretty decent.

Video Game Jam / MTV Music Generator 2
June 28, 2007, 05:03:04 PM
Anybody ever play around with MTV Music Generator 2 for PlayStation 2?  It more or less turns your PS2 into a 48-channel digital recording studio.  It comes with over 10,000 samples and it's all you need to replace a backing band.  You can program it like a drum machine, add basslines, rhythm guitars strumming chords or arpeggios, etc.  You can easily create one guitar part from a game tab and play the other part along with it.  It will do almost anything, and has a nice set of built-in digital effects.  Plus, you can sample your own sounds if you can find the USB mic and recording kit for it.  It's awesome.  I've been using it for years.  Using a video game to create video game music.  That's beyond cool.  Any opinions?

Tab Requests / Re: Golden Axe

My friend William's game music band, The One-Ups, has performed and recorded "Dancing Mad" from Final Fantasy VI (III US).  They're on MySpace, but I can't remember the exact page link.  And I'm stuck a long way from home in a hospital where they have MySpace blocked because it's a web community with adult content.  I think I may have the tab for "Dancing Mad" but I think it was 18 pages long.  Heh.  Gotta love Final Fantasy Mystic Quest music.

I've heard nothing but good things about those Valve Kings.  Pretty affordable, too.  I need to check one out.

Is that name "Kotex" supposed to be based on the feminine hygiene products of the same name?  Because if so, that's... I don't know what else to say.  Heh.  No offense if it's not.  Just, nevermind.  Forget I said anything.

Tab Requests / Re: VGJ requests

Oh, I have a complete tab for Final Fantasy X-2 - "Eternity ~Memories of Light and Waves~" somewhere.  I found it on a website once.  It's arranged for solo guitar.  It's got sheet music with it, too.  Should I make a scan of it or do you need it tabbed out in txt format?

I also have a complete tab of Super Mario Bros. 2 - "Overworld", I believe.  Isn't this it?  http://home.swipnet.se/nestabs/tabs/nes/smb2-21.txt

As for Valkyrie Profile - "All Is Twilight", I did a complete tab to it a while back.  It's for guitar and bass.  I tabbed it directly from Motoi Sakuraba's original piano score.  It's in a notebook, so I just gotta copy it down in Notepad.

I can also do the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest ones.  I've got partial tabs I've made for the Temple, Aquaria, Doom Castle, Focus Tower, and Battle music.  I'll get to work on those.

Nah, playing game music isn't dorky.  It's some of the best-composed music out there.  Anyway, nice guitars.  I wish I had a Taylor.  I'm hoping to get a Martin HD-28 someday, but I'd settle for a Taylor, no prob.  And Showmasters are nice.  I used to have on in cherry sunburst with gold hardware.  As for a semi-hollowbody electric, you should check out a Schecter C/SH-1.  They're light as a feather, have a deep, growling bottom end when you overdrive them, and the harmonics are exquisite.  Plus, you can pick up a new one for under $600.  They come in:

Tobaccon Sunburst, Vintage Trans Red - http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM04/Content/Schecter/PR/CSH-1-lg.jpg

Limited Edition Gloss Black - http://www.onlinestagegear.com/brand/Schecter/C/CSH1-Black.jpg

Or if you're really lucky, you might find one in the rare Natural Satin finish like I got.  I have a pic of mine up on my MySpace page in my Pics.  Just look for the folder called My Guitars.  - http://www.myspace.com/the_homeless_romantic

Tab Requests / Re: VGJ requests

There's some song from Silent Hill 2 that's on the movie, too.  I don't know the name of it, but I'll tab it out one of these days.  It's a piano piece.  And I can probably take care of the Mega Man X and Final Fantasy III tabs.  Maybe the Star Ocean III, Phantasy Star II, and Castlevania: SotN tabs.  We'll see how much time I can find with college, a new baby, and the band.  Anybody gonna do any ActRaiser 2 tabs for me?  That'd be sweet.  I just don't have the time for all that.  I could give you sheet music, though.  Anyway...

Yeah, I love my C-1 Artist.  It's light, has a Les Paul-like bottom end, and they go for less than $500.  I used to have a Fernandes that looked like a Strat.  It was a Revolver Pro.  Had one of those sweet Sustainer pickups in it.  Great for doing Nirvana, Type O Negative, Machine Head, stuff like that.  I know most B.C. Rich players prefer Warlocks, but Mockingbirds are just great.  The balance is superb.  They have a perfect center of gravity for stand-up playing.  Slash used to play them until he got endorsed by Gibson.  I'm working on an endorsement with Schecter.  I just bought a custom C-1 with a quilted maple top that's stained with flesh, blood, and rust colored paints.  Looks like something out of a Silent Hill film.  I haven't gotten it in my possession yet, but here's a pic from the website I ordered it from.  Comments?  I totally dig the Wilkinson trem on it.  Very unique for a Schecter.  Speaking of Silent Hill, anybody heard that song "Sweet Nurse" by Katatonia?  That should totally have been the song for the ending credits to the Silent Hill movie.  Anyway, I digress.

I'm not sure if this is even related to this subject, but I know they make these off-brand console systems now that play Nintendo cartridges.  I've heard this is because copyright/licensing rights have expired on the Nintendo Entertainment System.  Does anybody know anything about whether or not they have these sort of consoles to play Super Nintendo cartridges, and if not, when they're going to be making them?  I've heard rumors from used game buy/sell/trade stores that it's only a matter of time.  Sorry for my lack of info beyond that.  I can find out more information about these "Nintendos" if anyone else is interested.  It'd be nice if they'd come out with these for Sega Genesis and Neo Geo cartridges, too.

Well, you're SUPPOSED to have to pay fees to record a cover song.  But VGJam is just players' interpretations of songs.  They're not always correct and almost never complete.  So, if it's not the EXACT same song, it's not really infringing anything.  Sucks that some of these song titles we have to guess as, though.  Once I found a website that had practically every RPG OSV in the world noted and the track names translated, including ICO for PS2.  Anybody know about this site?  Anyway, that one tab that's up now, "Castle in the Mist," is one I've been working on.  The mandolin and banjo parts (I can't believe I LIKE a song with mandolin and BANJO) are simple and pretty much explained in that tab.  I'm working on the guitar part.  It's not super complicated.  Easier than most Metallica songs, anyway.  Heh.
